Knaresborough Mothers' Union
Knaresborough Mothers' Union
Have you ever wondered who the Mothers' Union are? Thought perhaps it might be for you but just didn't know what they do? Then here's a snapshot of the Knaresborough Mothers' Union and some of the things that it's involved with.
Our Mothers' Union meetings take place in St. John's Church Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (no meetings in August). Our meetings begin with a short service followed by notices and then our Guest Speaker. After the Guest Speaker has finished we end our meetings with some light refreshments, a perfect time to chat with each other. If meeting once a month is all you want to commit to, then that's fine but some of our members also attend Provincial, Diocesan and Deanery Services and Meetings too. There is also the opportunity to support Diocesan and Deanery Projects both at home and abroad.
This year our Branch raised funds from the sale of a Cookery Book filled with members' favourite recipes. The money raised from this has helped to build a Girl's Hostel in Luweero, Uganda (our link diocese), so that girls from rural areas can stay in town to complete their education.
We send donations from our collection boxes to our Overseas Fund which supports Mothers' Union workers, the Family Life Programmes as well as Literacy and Development Programmes - Balaclavas and fingerless mittens are knitted for the Mission to Seafarers - Two of our members volunteer their help at the creche in Wealstun Prison - We also support "Away From It All," a caravan in Filey which offers a holiday at low cost to families or couples who need a break and would not otherwise have a holiday.
The Knaresborough Mothers' Union provides cards for the Sunday School Children that they can colour in for Mothering Sunday, Easter and Christmas. Our members help in various aspects of the church's work in the community. We are a very active Branch, if you would like to know more, come along to any of our meetings, you can be sure of a warm welcome.
